BENDRE 21 August 1910 / 19 February 1992 Mother & Child Series Oil on canvas, 1987 S/d in Devanagari ‘Bendre 87’ l.r. 23.3 x 35.6 in (59.3 x 90.5 cm) Provenance Mumbai-based Family Collection of Shri Naveen Chandra, purchased directly from the artist INR 2,000,000 – 3,000,000 US$ 28,169 – 42,254 To me, creative art demands transforming raw material from surroundings observed deliberately or by chance into an integrated whole. The process has purpose and meaning. Meaning to the creator first and to others later. I believe that all great works of art have abstract considerations at the root of the process, like establishing aesthetically desirable relationships of parts with the whole. Irrespective of beliefs, religious faith and nationality, the whole work appeals to everybody. – Ram Chatterjee “ Bendre” - The Painter and the Person , Bendre Foundation for Art and Culture, Bombay; Indus, New Delhi; 1990 Pg. 63-64 Badri experienced the lifestyles of all living beings along with nature and environment and blended them beautifully with his skills and creativity… Today Badri Nath Arya is synonymous with wash style of painting because not only limited to the lines and forms of Gupta Age – the ideal norms of Bengal School, with his unparalleled will power, which could not contain his experimentations, he gave recognition to the wash style of painting at international levels in conformity with the aesthetic values of modern definitions of contemporary art. – Shefali Bhatnagar rpt. in Badri Nath Arya , State Lalit Kala Akademi, Uttar Pradesh 2001
