The Lot is accompanied by a hand-written inscription by the artist to the collector on the title page of his new Sadanga Series book which was published by Vakils in 1966. This Lot will be accompanied with the inscribed copy of this book. Jehangir Sabavala b. 23 August 1922 – d. 2 September 2011 Still Life with Fruit Oil on canvas, 1949-50 18.3 x 24.0 in (46.4 x 61.0 cm) Signed ‘Sabavala’ l.l. ` 3,000,000 – 4,500,000 $ 41,670 – 62,500 Full DPS image on pp.2-3 17 Reference A painting from the same series was sold recently at Christie’s, 25 May 2017 (Lot 42) Still Life with Apples Oil on canvas, 1949 23.9 x 32 in Sold for GBP 125,000 detail Published Reference In the Inscribed Sadanga Series Sabavala book by Vakils on page 5 is an illustration of a painting “Golden Oranges” from the same 1949-50 Still Life series as Lot 17. The analytical Notes by S.V.V. Vasudev on this painting states: “The influence of the Paris School chiefly of the Impressionist search for nuances of colour and light, is felt here predominantly.
