40 Shanti Dave (b.1931) Untitled Mixed media with wax resin on canvas, 1965 S/d ‘Shanti Dave 65’ t.c.l. 29.9 x 29.9 in (76.0 x 76.0 cm) Provenance Acquired from the Collection of the Late Gunvantbhai Mangaldas Family Collection, by Late Lalit Kumar (Ex - Director of the L.D. Museum of Indology, Ahmedabad). INR 400,000 – 600,000 USD 6,250 – 9,375 detail Shanti Dave is an exciting and gifted texturalist…his striking originality emerges in the firm, skeletal architecture with which he anchors his sculptured surfaces. This type of pictorial relief is the very thing which can get so easily out of hand-as we see it constantly in the misguided attempts of so many artists who have adopted this mode, Dave creates his arresting surfaces by using quantities of soft wax which are applied to the canvas and then scraped away or planed with a palette knife. While handling this facile medium, he exercises a resolute control throughout. Edward Kelly rpt in Ravi K. Jain Gallery. New York City 1965 ExC.
