“In 1969, Jyoti Bhatt, along with Jeram Patel, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Vinodray Patel among others, put together an exhibition called Painters with a Camera in Bombay. Qualifying the camera as a painter’s tool, the artists in this exhibition sought to highlight the non-evidentiary painterly potential of the medium. Jyoti Bhatt’s own contribution to the exhibition made use of the tone - condensing, graphic property of a lith film, the dilating aspects of an enlarger and the cloning properties of a film negative to repeat an image endlessly. In these early experiments with the camera, the image was anchored to portraits of people close to him and photographs of Jyotsna Bhatt, transformed into a strong half-tone graphic presence, featured prominently in this body of work.” – Shukla Sawant quoted and reprinted in [BKC, 2011].
