46 Early/Mid 1910s Illustrative Reference Please refer to Dr. Ratan Parimoo, The Paintings of the Three Tagores: Abanindranath, Gaganendranath; Rabindranath. Chronology and Comparative Study. Baroda: M.S. University 1973; Fig. 120, for work in the same Japanese Brush Style series as Lot 17. This rare set of brush drawings in the Japanese TSUKETATE / BOKUSHOKU technique and style of using ink belongs to the formative period of the artist’s creativity. Gaganendranath was inspired by various interactions with Japanese artists (eg: Yokoyama Taikwan, J.Katsuta, Arai Kampo), sent to Jorasanko by K.Okakura. However it was not just the technique but a wider concept of the art which intrigued Gaganendranath. “Even the limited interest shown by Gaganbabu in colour also probably owes to Japanese art because there it is the black which is given emphasis, colour being considered as mere ornamentation.” – Ratan Parimoo.
