261 1992 “The famine of 1943 had a big impact on my psyche. Then the refugees from Partition. So many people coming to Calcutta. I myself am from Chittagong. I was in Calcutta, before the Partition, since 1940, so in a way I am not a refugee, but they were my people, and so those things affected me. And at that time, whatever I did, were more sentimental rather than artistic creations. I have never hesitated in admitting this.” – Somnath Hore (in conversation with Neville Tuli), The Flamed Mosaic – Indian Contemporary Painting , HEART/ Mapin, 1997, p307. 139 Somnath Hore 13 April 1921 – 28 June 2006 Untitled Sketchbook (24 pages) Sketch pen on paper, 1992 Initialled & dated in English on each page 11.6 x 11.3 in (29.5 x 28.7 cm) Provenance Private Mumbai-based Collector ` 800,000 – 1,600,000 US$ 14,550 – 29,100 GBP 10,000 – 20,000
