Consequently he developed a passion for visual art from his childhood; but his father did not allow him to pursue art as a career and he grew up as a self taught artist 1930-1 Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta (Studied Painting under Kshitindranath Majumdar and Sculpture under Shri Giridhari Maharana, a hereditary carver from Orissa) 1938 Studied Sculpture under Prof. R. Wlerick at Académié de la Grande Chaumiére, Paris & Stone Carving at the Atelier of M. Victor Giovanelli Select Teaching and Infrastructure-building Activities 1930 He became a regular exhibitor of paintings at all major exhibitions in Calcutta and other centers 1935-7 Served as a School Teacher in Bengal 1940-2 Lecturer in Art and Craft, Teacher’s Training Department, University of Calcutta 1943-5 Lecturer in Sculpture, Art Department, Delhi Polytechnic 1946 Left for London where he settled down as a practicing artist. During his stay in London he prepared two excellent monographs on Indian Sculpture published by Alec Trianti Ltd, London 1956 Principal, Government College of Arts & Craft, Kolkata when he first organised open air show of sculptures 1960-1 Worked on Restoration of Paintings under the Directorate General des Musées de France under a French Government Scholarship Keeper, Art Gallery, Indian Museum, Calcutta Select Awards and Honours 1948 Awarded Silver Medal and Diploma for Great Britain at the International Competition of Sport in Art, XIV Olympiad, London 1974 Padmabhushan, Government of India 1983 Conferred Fellowship Emeritus, Govt. of India 1986 D’Litt.
