Besides being able to handle the difficult transparent medium with absolute facility, the young painter also composed with unhampered, easy assurance and shimmering richness of colour which added a poetic lyricism to his works. His paintings then were really beautiful - not pretty, but beautiful. His latest compositions are still beautiful, but with a marked difference. They are the works of a thoughtful, matured artist. Meditation has replaced poetic lyricism and a subtle abstraction gives his present works, inspite of their modest dimensions, - an air of monumentality and power. He has abandoned the specific visual reality of a subject and now sets out, instead, to reveal and express with deep emotion the pictorial possibilities of the rhythm of spaces that he realises in the various oppositions and continuities of forms. On his own, through accumulated aesthetic experience, Ganesh Haloi has discovered what Hiroshige once said - ‘Art is not what we see, but how we see it.’’ (Sushil Mukherjee, rpt. in Ganesh Haloi: Jehangir Art Gallery Gouache ExC.1993.)
