H emendranaTH m azumdar 19 September 1894 – 22 July 1948 after the Bath Oil on canvas, 1940-42 Signed in English ‘Hmazumdar’ on verso Inscribed in English ‘Hamen Mazumdar’ on frame (verso) 54.6 x 26.4 in (136.5 x 66.0 cm) Provenance Acquired from a collector of Hemendranath Mazumdar, who in turn acquired the painting from the patron in Chinsura, Howrah, where the artist stayed during 1933-35 and 1940-42. Hemen established his famous ‘DHIREN STUDIO’ here and painted various versions of his earlier paintings such as Manas Kamal, After the Bath, along with major portraits of the Nationalist struggle movement, among others for his patron and himself.
