84 59 B. C. Sanyal (1902 – 2003) Boy S/d in English ‘B.Sanyal 89’, l.r. Oil on canvas, 1989 36.0 x 43.0 in (91.5 x 109.5 cm) INR 640,000 – 720,000 USD 16,000 – 18,000 “Sanyal’s figures, as and when they emerge in his painting, are not tense with recollection of a long life, on the contrary they are stoical apprehension of the mystery of existence. Both figure and space can be tinglingly alive; figure in the energy and vivacity of the modeling, the space by implication. Sometimes the extremities of a particular context can be disputed or text extended, and we are shown an interior or exterior drama between a figure and its prescribed content. But if the figures, and the space in which they exist, are specific enough, some kind of interpretation from one to another creates a generalized association.” Keshav Malik rpt. in B.C.Sanyal: The Middle Course (Seminar Papers Sanyal And The Art Of His Times) Lalit Kala Akademi 1992.
