136 107 Anju Dodiya (b.1964) Self Portrait Watercolour on paper, 2004 18.5 x 21.5 in (47.0 x 54.6 cm) INR 1,600,000 – 2,000,000 USD 40,000 – 50,000 ‘Anju Dodiya’s paintings are parables, in that they propose ways in which we can distribute our passions, confront our perplexities, keep watch over the instabilities that threaten to overturn us. We recognize ourselves and our predicaments in her paintings; but return, with her, to the harrowing flux of life. The work of art strengthens and nourishes us, but we cannot escape into it. Living is the hard labour to which the artist returns, and we with her; and the angel-wing of grace brushes our efforts from time to time. The vigil for the revelatory image continues.’ – Ranjit Hoskote rpt. in Anju Dodiya Bose Pacia New York ExC 2006.
