Signed in Devnagari ‘Mangal’ l.l. INR 300,000 – 375,000 USD 6,750 – 8,450 (Set of 2) ‘Mangalsinghji is a superb draughtsman with an extra- ordinary sense of graphic design. His mastery in handling human gures in terms of precise realism gives him the freedom to reinterpret them with ease in purely at graphic terms. He is at his best when confronted by a constricted space, for the very compression of each gure, and the inter-relationship between several, creates an atmosphere of concentration and charged visual tension.’ – E. Alkazi rpt. in Art Heritage 13, 1993-94 ; p7. 38 RASIK RAVAL (1928–80) Cows & Shepherds S/d in English ‘Raval 50’ l.r. Watercolour on handmade paper, 1950 3.9 x 13.0 in (10.0 x 33.0 cm) INR 120,000 – 150,000 USD 2,700 – 3,400 ‘All his works have a charming lyrical feeling, aided by attractive colours and graceful linear quality. On the whole his works convey the same feeling that is conveyed by Vrajabhasa poetry, describing Gopis and Gawalans, which incidentally, Raval also paints frequently…His paintings now bear the stamp of matured simplicity and directness, both in form and colour, and slowly he is getting rid of the slick and sweet effect which gave his pictures a stamp of supercial prettiness at one time.’ – R.C. rpt. in Marg Vol.VI, No.1, 1953 ; p33.
