This type of pictorial relief is the very thing which can get so easily out of hand - as we see it constantly in the misguided attempts of so many artists who have adopted this mode, Dave creates his arresting surfaces by using quantities of soft wax which are applied to the canvas and then scraped away or planed with a palette knife.
