ABSTACT-FIGURATIVE DILEMMA 183 166 AVINASH CHANDRA (1931 — 91) Untitled S/d in English, l.l. Watercolor & Ink on paper, 1980 52.6 x 73.5 cm. (20.7 x 28.9”) “Avinash Chandra is an artist of great energy; already he has accomplished a considerable output of oil paintings, many of them of large dimensions, and of coloured ink drawings. Energy is the obvious characteristic of his work which finds expression by the continuous use of sexual images symbolising his delight in the exuberance of life, the resilience that is demanded of us and the sheer enjoyment of everything in nature. In this respect, Chandra is true to his use of time — time that is sensuous, taut, flowing, or intricate according to mood and intention. And further he is truly Indian in his fine sense of rich colour in which he shows a preference for reds and yellows which he plays off effectively against white and black”.
